Do you believe that?  I mean REALLY believe it?

Many people have said some form of this phrase over the years.  It always sounds good and maybe a little too optimistic, right?  Rumi, Wayne Dyer, Jesus through Peter the apostle.  It’s even inscribed outside a temple in Kyoto, Japan.  Think about that.  All these different traditions have some form of the same sentiment.  That should make us accept and take action on it, but do we?

How would your life be different if you believed you have what you need?  How would you act?  What would you do differently, and what would you do the same?  I follow several experts who have completely transformed their lives and the lives of many others like me by BEing the person who already has everything they need.  James Wedmore and Jim Fortin are a couple of the best of those experts.

As soon as I understand what a new client wants to achieve with our time together, I start asking some fairly basic and super-difficult to answer questions.  Things like:

  • How would your life be different if you already had what you want?
  • Who would you be?How would you feel?
  • What would you do?

If you haven’t ever tried to answer those questions, stop reading right now and do that.  I’ll still be here when you’re finished.

Okay, did you do it?  If you didn’t, just do it now please.  You won’t regret it.

I take myself through these questions when I’m starting a new project, when I have a new passion, and when something I’ve believed no longer holds true for me.  It does get easier to answer the questions, but they always require a lot of FEELING and contemplating.  Notice which one of those words is capitalized.  That’s true for a reason, but it’s a big topic for a future blog.

Now, after you’ve answered the questions, you have a choice to make.  You can decide to BE the person who already has what you want, or you can keep doing what you’ve always done and hope for a different outcome.  Albert Einstein is very often quoted as saying “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”  It wasn’t actually him.  It was Rita Mae Brown, but the message is a valid one.  But again, it’s your choice to make.

Let’s assume that you choose to be the person who already has what you want.  What James and Jim both talk about (again, multiple sources of the same principle) is the BE, DO, HAVE model.  The short version of that model is that you first have to BE the person who has what you want.  Then, you DO the things that this person would do.  Then, and only then, you will actually have what you want.  It’s backwards from what most would tell you, but it’s absolute truth.

Next, it’s important that you understand that you would not have that vision, dream, goal, or desire, if you didn’t also have whatever you need to bring it into existence.  I’ve talked before about where to find your answers.  That’s inside you, not from some external source.  And, here we are again.  You have everything you need already inside.

If you accept that you already have everything you need, why don’t you have everything you want?  Because you don’t believe you already have everything you need.  That is the first step.  Believe it, so you can see it.  Again, it’s the opposite of what most of us have been taught.  Give it a try.  What do you have to lose, other than a potentially false and definitely limiting belief?

Still need some proof that this works?  Okay, try this example on for size.  At the time of this writing, it’s early 2021.  People have made new year’s resolutions and had a week to fail at them.  What was yours?  Have you given up yet, or are you still trying?  I am a complete Star Wars nerd (as is my entire family) and one of my favorite lines in the whole series is when Yoda says to Luke “Do, or do not.  There is no try.”  Did you believe him?  I did.  I posted on social media that I’m not a big believe in new year’s resolutions but that I do believe we can BEcome whoever we want to be.  Let’s say that you made a resolution to lose weight.  Been there.  Done that.  You start off strong, eating better, working out, maybe even drinking more water.  Then, life happens, and you miss a workout or you eat a piece of cake, and you decide that you’ve failed already, so why bother continuing to try?  Resolution over.  Goal not met.  But, what if you tried a different approach instead?  Ask yourself who would I be and what would be different if I was already fit and healthy?  Who are fit and healthy people, and how do that act?  The probably do workout and eat better than most of us, right?  But, they aren’t perfect.  They’re going to have a tough day when they can’t get to the gym, or they may even suffer a minor injury.  They’re going to be invited to a birthday party and actually have that piece of cake.  In other words, they’re a lot like us.  What is likely different, though, is that when they miss the mark by skipping a workout or eating a piece of cake, they likely have a different reaction.  Do they give up?  No, because they are already fit & healthy.  Do they beat themselves up and say “I’m a failure”?  No, because they aren’t.  Their reaction is to go on about their lives, get up the next day and go to the gym or at least skip the cake.  See the difference?  They are acting like the fit and healthy people they are.  That’s what I’m talking about here.  If we make the choice to BE the person who has what we want, we will DO the things that person would do, and then we will HAVE what we want.
