Do you take care of all three?

You are a spiritual being currently having a human experience.  Your soul –the infinite you—is made up of your mind, body, and spirit.  If you care for one or two, but not the other parts, you limit just how whole you can become during this brief physical life.

If you eat right and participate in physical activities, you’re taking care of your body.  That seems to be the focus these days, but that’s only one part of you.  What about your mind?  What about your spirit?

Some people exercise their mind, but not their body or their spirit.  They may play brain games, read a lot, meditate, or some combination.  This is extremely important, but once again, the mind is only one part of you.

Others tend to focus only on the spirit.  They may participate in some form of worship, practice yoga and meditation, or take a different spiritual path.  That s all good, but it’s still not enough to exercise your spirit and ignore your mind or your body.

Take a minute and consider what you are currently doing for your mind, your body, AND your spirit.  You need all three, and all three deserve practices or rituals to honor and exercise them.  I’m sure you’ve heard if you’re not growing, you are declining – or even dying.  So, what practices do you currently have?

Just like you work out your body, or consider what substances you are putting into it, you need to do the same for your mind and spirit.  That isn’t as easy as it sounds, but it is simple.  Are you filling your mind with fear or junk, or are you filling it with love and potential?  My son and his fiancée recently told me about a horror movie they watched.  After it was over, my son had to go to work, and his fiancée was left alone.  It scared her, as you would expect.  My question was why would you fill your mind with the energy of a horror movie?  Whatever you allow into your mind brings its energy to you, and that can result in fear, or it can result in expansion.  Choose wisely.  And, yes, I know sometimes being scared can be exciting.  I love roller coasters, for example.  But, it is worth considering and making an informed choice.

Some of you may already allow only positive energy into your mind.  In fact, I am sure some of you actually catch yourselves before you allow a fearful or negative thought to enter your mind.  If you don’t already do this, try it.  If you start to worry about something or fear an outcome that hasn’t happened yet, just stop.  Try saying “I do not accept this worry or thought.  It is not my truth, and I will not spend time thinking it.”  It may sound odd, but it actually works.  The only way negative thoughts or fears come into your mind is if you allow it.  So, don’t.

Now, let’s talk about taking care of your spirit.  Whether or not you have or observe any religious beliefs, you are part spirit—and, spirit means different things to different people.  If you are not a religious person, consider treating your spirit as the part of you that isn’t limited by time or space.  If you’ve ever been “in the zone”, you understand what that means.  There are many practices you can establish that benefit your spirit, including journaling, reflection, meditation, and even contemplation or imagination.  Pick one of these or another one that appeals to you, and try doing that one practice every day for the next month.  See how it helps you or changes your attitude about life.

Even those of you who DO exercise all parts of you – mind, body, and spirit – can change things up a bit in one or more areas.  You can think of this as muscle confusion for all three parts.  You cannot help but grow in some way by taking a different perspective or trying a new practice.

What I’ve found over the years is that I tend to focus on one or two parts.  While caring for even one part of you is good, it doesn’t lead to wholeness.  That is what we all need to become our highest selves, so why cheat ourselves out of any of that?  One thing I’ve been doing for about six years now is scheduling time in my planner every day for my mind, my body, and my spirit.  Now, just scheduling time doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, but for me, if it isn’t scheduled, there’s no way it’s going to happen.  Planning the activities sets my intention to make them happen.
